Different Drummers Drum Circle (DDDC) hosts open, freestyle drum circles for people of all ages and skill levels. First and Third Sundays of every month, from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM, participants gather at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Santa Fe, 107 Barcelona. No prior experience is necessary, and extra drums are always provided, so everyone can join in and explore rhythm freely.
Our circles encourage connection, creativity, and joy. Whether you’re drumming, listening, or dancing, you’ll feel part of a welcoming community. Participation is completely free, and newcomers are warmly encouraged to join — all you need is your curiosity and energy.
Before each drum circle, Rick offers a short, 10-minute lesson designed for beginners. These mini lessons provide an introduction to basic rhythms, hand techniques, and improvisation, giving new drummers the confidence to join the circle. You’ll learn to find your own beat, explore different drums, and feel comfortable participating without pressure or judgment.
The focus is on fun, creativity, and connection rather than perfection. These lessons are free, and participants are encouraged to ask questions, try different rhythms, and enjoy the process of learning in a supportive environment.
No drum? No problem! Rick brings a variety of hand drums — djembes, congas, cajons, and frame drums — for all participants to use during the circle. You can “test drive” as many drums as you like, explore different sounds, and find the one that feels right for you.
The goal is to ensure everyone can join in and experience the joy of drumming without needing to purchase an instrument. Rick’s long-time experience with drums allows him to give guidance on technique and recommend drums for those who wish to eventually own one. Drum sharing is free and encouraged — the more you play, the more rhythm flows

Rick creates a space where everyone feels connected through rhythm. I was impressed by how effortlessly people of all ages and skill levels played together. It’s not just drumming — it’s community, joy, and pure expression.
I never knew group drumming could be this relaxing and uplifting. The circle is beautifully organized, friendly, and accessible. The free lessons and extra drums made it easy for me to jump in and enjoy.
